Extremely high wear resistance.
Excellent size stability in heat treatment.
Deep hardening in air.
Used for cold work tools requiring very long runs and close
tolerance. D2 has high compressive strength and is used for
blanking, stamping, and cold forming dies where emphasis is not on
toughness. Some other applications are slitters, punches, thread
rolling dies and trim dies.
Although readily machinable in the annealed condition D2 has a
lower rating than most other tool steels. It is rated at 40% of a
1% carbon tool steel. It also has a low to medium grindability
D2 should be surface protected duting annealing and slowly heated
to 1600degree to 1650degree. Hold at temperature for one hour per
inch of thickness and then furnace cool 100°pre hour to 1000°F to
below. The part may then be cooled in still air. The annealed
hardness of D2 is 212 to 248 Brinell.
